Happy 1st Birthday Jasper!

Thanks to Uncle Tone for the awesome bday card!

I know I have mentioned this before but it is really unbelievable that our little guy is not so little anymore.  He's still my baby but even when we are out and about, people we bump into always comment on how much of a little boy he looks like already.

Jasper's fun personality is coming out more and more everyday.  He loves playing fort by hiding under the blanket or in the Thomas train pop-up tent or with the cushions off the couch.  When the boys play with the couch cushions it really reminds me of when June-yee, Uncle John, and I did the same thing when we were younger.  He loves blowing raspberries but watch out because his tongue comes out and you might get your face washed if you are too close! (and messy when he does it with a mouth full of food!)  Peek-a-boo is still a favorite and peering around the corner of walls or furniture to get a sneaky look is a new way he has discovered to play the game.  My personal favorite way of getting a laugh out of Jasper is Sam's way.  Sam just gives his brother funny looks in the car and both boys are giggling away.  Definitely a road hazard as Mommy has to remember to keep her eyes on the road!

No words yet for this little guy but I know he definitely recognizes some words like Daddy, Sam, bird and good night.  If I ask where Daddy is, he knows who to look for.  I thought he said, "bird" as we see a lot of them at Shelly Bay park but when I showed the video to Daddy, it sounded more like, "Ba" and he was kind of pointing to everything.  Sometimes I also think he says, "This" and "That" when he is pointing but again, it probably is more of me "interpreting" his sounds.  When it is time for bed, I pick him up and make our rounds to Daddy and Sam to say "good night" and Jasper automatically lays his head on my shoulder, very sweet.  Oh!  And of course I have to mention the lightsaber sounds that he makes when he, Daddy and Sam play Star Wars.

This only happened one time, but I had to change Jasper's diaper and when he saw me sit down with the wipes and diaper, he crawled over and laid down in front of me.  He landed a bit hard and bumped his head so I figure that is why he has not done it again since.  I still think he is very perceptive of his surroundings and can anticipate things that are about to happen.  Just about everytime I dress him, he sticks out his leg to help me dress him, even if it is a shirt, but I think it is very good of him to try.  He is really into sorting things as well, whether it is building blocks, Sam's little army men or sorting shapes, he loves taking them in and out of containers and shaking them about to make noise in the container.  As the same with our collection of instruments, all of our rattles get a good shake and whistles whistled almost everyday.

Jasper at 11 months and Sam at 17 months

Jasper is recognizing the sound of music, whether it is the theme songs to "Little Einsteins" or "Curious George", or the Leap Frog magnetic toys we have on our fridge, his little arm starts waving about or he starts bouncing up and down.  I remember when Sam was about this age and he started bobbing his head up and down when he heard "Billie Jean" by Micheal Jackson at the grocery store, it was a very proud moment.

Not the best thing to mention but Jasper is developping a bit of a temper.  When we take something from him that he really wants or can't reach for something too high (he loves reaching for things from the table and counters with his newfound height) he will either bend totally forward and put his head on the ground or he will totally stretch out of our arms and be really stiff and make a whiny kind of cry.  This is something we will not encourage but it is kind of amusing to see because he is trying so hard and we know he is certainly not going to get his way.

Jasper still practices all the little tricks that Po Po taught him, like "deem chung chung"; clapping his hands, which he does when he hears clapping on tv or funnily enough when I am nursing him at night; and "aww aww", which he sometimes does out of the blue to Sam when he is laying on the couch.  I have been trying to teach him "champion" in which he should lift both arms in the air when he hears the word but so far he just wants to lift only one arm, oh well, still close.  He also can climb up on the couch no problem, whether to get to Sam's toys that Sam put out of reach on purpose or even just to sit back and lounge (lounging is usually no more than 30 seconds though).  Jasp still loves searching in the fridge for his own snack (loves getting a yogurt and making a mess), feeding Mommy and Daddy (though he sometimes changes his mind and pulls the food right back out of our mouths) and what I call "high risk" tricks: opening and closing doors and going down slides head first.  His ultimate "trick" this month, which was his 1st birthday present to himself is the gift of walking!!  Watch out world, Jasper is on the move!!  His walking skills are getting stronger everyday and he definitely prefers to walk over crawling.  He can walk from room to room now but he sometimes tries to walk too fast so he more lunges forward and falls quite a bit.  I love seeing this little person toddling around and being my little shadow.

Food wise, Jasper has tried a bit of cow's milk.  I thought he would love it as he has with everything else but the milk got a tepid reception.  I am not pushing it as we are heading home to Canada soon and I figure nursing Jasper on the plane will help him sleep.  One of his nursing habits however, is to do many yoga poses.  He grabs one foot with one hand and he does all sorts of stretching poses.  My face usually gets a nice foot massage and sometimes a stinky toe ends up in my nose.  We'll have to reign in those poses when we are on the plane.

Jasper's most special present (besides walking) would be Big Bird from his big brother Sam.  Sam thought of it all by himself and thank goodness we were able to find one on this small island of ours.  Sam helped Jasper open the present and as soon as Sam handed over Big Bird to Jasper, Jasper gave Big Bird the biggest cuddle!
