We had a bit of time after Sam's school pick up and before his dentist appointment so we went to town for a "mango juice" (mango slurpee) and a fish sandwich. We didn't quite have enough time to walk over to Daddy's office so we decided to have lunch at the park closeby. And what luck, there was a man playing a steel drum when we arrived so it was quite enjoyable to eat with some live entertainment. We sat next to an elderly couple who came off the cruise ship and they were thouroughly impressed by both boys' appetites. Just as we finished up our sandwich, the town crier came by and announced that the Gombeys were coming.
The Gombeys are the island's premier folk art. There is about 10-30 males who dance to a band playing a kettle drum, a snare drum and a fife. The dances have a story and it is a great way to show tourists a bit of Bermuda culture and history. It is pretty loud and I was not sure how the boys would react but both of them loved it and Sam even kept asking about it for days afterwards. He has even seen pictures of British guards and asked if they were Gombeys as well - hmmm...sort of close Sam!
