Thanks Kim!

The government of Bermuda offers every child born in Bermuda a free assessment of the child's development at the age of 2.  Then if there are any signs of physical, mental or social delay, it can be caught in the early stages  and be treated by services (again free!) sponsored by the government.

Sam was assessed when he was almost 2 1/2 years old and it was no surprise to me and Will that his delay in speech was a point of concern from the assessor.  Will and I are not worried because Will was exactly the same way when he was Sam's age (and as we all know Will's speech is clear and understandable now) but a speech therapist was offered to us so we thought we would give it a go.  After all, it just cost us time in our home, which we had plenty of since we had a relatively newborn baby napping almost all the time.

Kim was great with Sam.  She always brought fun toys with her to help Sam practice the sounds he had trouble pronouncing.  I just felt a bit sorry for Kim sometimes because Sam can be a pretty tough cookie when he decides to be.  He takes awhile to warm up to a person, he only likes to participate and do things on his own terms, and he had just started school and woke up from his nap when Kim came for her sessions.

Time with Kim and I think with general maturity of age,  Sam's vocabulary and pronounciation improved immensely over the past year.  Sam's "K" sounds was a noticeable difference as words like "tookie" and "Tim" transformed to "cookie" and "Kim"!  I remember a cute little incident when we first starting working on the sound: we were washing our hands and I said to Sam, "the water is c-c-cold" and he said, "no Mommy, the water is c-c-hot!"

Sadly, Kim only works with younger children so we had to say goodbye to her at the end of June.  Thanks Kim for all your time and help!
